FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What do I need to bring?
A towel and sunscreen. UV rays in Hawaii are INCREDIBLY strong, especially reflected off the water. It isn't a bad idea to wear a long-sleeve t-shirt in addition to waterproof sunscreens with a very high SPF number. Your board and /or paddle will be provided for you.

What skills do I need in order to take a lesson?
To have a lesson, you MUST know how to swim, and be completely fear-free of the ocean.

How many lessons does it take to really learn to surf or paddleboard?
Each lesson builds your abilities, theoretically, much faster than if you paddled around on your own. Obviously, everyone's ability level is different, but with these lessons, you will definitely get a good foundation!

What is the typical water temperature?
Approximately 78 degrees.

What is the risk of shark bites?
Incidents of sharks biting people in Hawaiian waters are very rare, occurring on average at a rate of about three or four per year. Fatal shark bites are extremely rare, especially considering the number of people in Hawaii's waters. People who enter the water need to recognize that there are hidden dangers. A number of marine animals can cause serious injury to people, and sharks are just one example. Entering the ocean should be considered a "wilderness experience," where people are visitors in a world that belongs to the sharks. The risk of injury caused by sharks is extremely small, but it is a risk accepted by anyone who enters the shark's world. By learning more about sharks, using common sense and observing safety tips about all Hawaiian marine life, your risk may be greatly reduced.

I am seeking surf lessons for my kids 6 and 5, they are not great swimmers but have the basics. Would this suit them?
If your kids can swim unassisted and want to try, we'll prepare them for going into the water with us. Young children learn very quickly, but like the adults who surf, they need some desire and courage to be out on the ocean waters. If a child thinks surfing is cool, we will do our best to develop their skills so they will have a fun experience. However, a child is at all wary about the ocean, this might not be a good activity. The same can be said for adults: Grown-ups who can swim and like being in the water tend to have a positive experience, while people who are afraid or have trepidation about the ocean or their swimming abilities might be better off trying another activity during their Hawaiian visit.

How can I prepare for my Surfing/Paddleboarding lesson?
1. DO PUSH-UPS! If you currently don't do these, start with repetitions of 5-10 push-ups, and do at least that or a few more for 10 days prior to your lesson. This will build your upper body strength and allow you to balance more successfully.
2. DO SIT-UPS AND PLANKING BALANCES! Surfing has quite a bit to do with balance and core strength. Start with 5 or 10 sit-ups per night, and try some planking balances (i.e. hold yourself parallel with only your toes and elbows touching the floor, while your body remains as level as possible) for 30 seconds to 1 minute per day, to strengthen your core/torso.
3. DON'T TRY SURFING OR PADDLE BOARDING IT IF IT'S A CHORE! We want your surfing or SUP experience to be fun and enjoyable, but it DOES require some physical exertion and strength. As long as you are okay with a little exercise going in to the lesson of your choice, we're sure you'll discover an activity that you'll want to try again and again!
4. BE AWARE THAT SOME PEOPLE CAN BECOME SEASICK ON A BOARD! Riding on a surfboard in ocean water can be similar to riding on a boat in ocean water...if you are prone to seasickness, you might want to take over-the-counter precautions before your lesson.
5. THINK OF SOME QUESTIONS BEFORE YOUR LESSON! Your instructors always try to provide some time for Q & A, and they will do their very best to field your questions about surfing, Hawaii, or any other subject with which they might be of assistance!

TEACHER CERTIFICATIONS:
All instructors annually renew their CPR, Professional Rescuer and First Aid Administrator certifications with the American Red Cross. Every three years, teachers are also required to renew their American Red Cross Life Guard certifications, as well as their Surf Instructor licenses issued through the State of Hawaii's Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation.

Additional information: All students must sign a release of liability form before the lesson begins.
